DIGGING!

Our mini-Australian Shepherd is hyper, to say the least. When we leave him outside, he digs at the edges of our lawn all day long. He's actually doing quite a bit of damage despite only weighing 8 lbs.! I don't want to put him in a kennel all day and scolding him when we get home doesn't seem to help. I really don't want to make him afraid of me. Any suggestions?

The number one cause to digging is boredom. Breed such as the one you have are working/herding type dogs and because of this they need copious amounts of both physical and mental stimulation. Your dog by nature is a very high energy dog and needs something to preoccupy his time. I suggest obedience training possibly agility. These dogs excel at this. A dog left to it's own means will find ways to cope with boredom sometimes with less than pleasant consequences. Keep your dog active. Exercise, exercise, exercise. Good luck

He needs exercise. A tired dog does not dig.
