Hip Problems

I have a 120lb. dog that has some hip problems. Sometimes he gets so bad that he can't walk very well for a few days. We were told by the vet that we could give him Baby Bayer but that upsets his stomach and then he won't eat.
Does anyone know of any other remedies that may help ease his pain? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hello idahoextreme2, Being a loving pet owner I go out of my way to do whatever I can to make my pets comfortable at all times and even more so when they develop health issues. I think I truly feel their pain sometimes. The question I have for you is how old is your dog, is he overweight, has your vet diagnosed him with any health issues such as hip displaysia?. Knowing a few more details might help to not only find a way treat the symptoms but possibly ways to help deal wit the underlying cause. BTW I would love to know you dogs name and breed. It really helps to make things a bit more informal.I look forward to your reply.

Jenger- thanks for your comments. Atlas is 13 years old... poor guy, Although most of the time he acts like a puppy. He is part Rottweiler and part Husky. You can see a picture of him under photos on this site. The vet has never diagnosed him with hip displaysia, just that he is having hip complications. I know most of it is because he is old and Rottweilers are notorious for hip problems. Atlas has been with our family a long time and I want to make him as comfortable as I can when he is hurting. I have seen a little spring in his step since we got another puppy who's name is Tobias and he is a 5 month old pomeranian. They love to play together! I think the little guy is rougher than Atlas! Anyways... any help you can give me will be greatly appreciated!

I just took a look at the pic you have posted of Atlas. He's certainly a noble handsome fellow. You are to be commended for the obvious good care you have taken of him over the years as he as outlived the normal life expectancy for either of these breeds. I suspect his problems are age related. i know after a day of vigorous activity with either of my dogs I get a little stiff in the hips as well. Always keep in mind that a dog who loves his owner has a willingness to please that is unsurpassed and with working dogs sometimes they don't know their own limitations. He's not a young dog anymore and it's up to you to regulate his physical activity because it's like he does'nt know his own limits. I network with heavily with trainers throughout the country who compete in obedience, sporting, and protection type training on a daily basis and I hear this from them about some of the dogs they have had for many years. A product that is endorsed by many of them is GlucosaPet. I've heard many great things about this product for the problems you describe.I will enclose the link at the end of this post. This is only an alternative and certainly doesn't replace the care, knowledge, or advice of your vet.I certainly hope Atlas continues to give you a good many more years of service but keep in mind he's not a kid anymore. Have a good day!!

Hello again. Just wanted to pass along some info I recieved from a number of people this afternoon. Another thing you might talk to you vet about is Rimadyl. This is by prescription only from your vet and it is recommended to be used in conjunction with glucosamine and chondroiton. I've used the Rimadyl for post surgical procedures but I understand it to have anti-inflammatory properties as well that might be helpful. The one thing I've been hearing the most about is Dermaxx. One of the good things about this med is it's easy on the stomach as well. Hope this helps.
